Shelf Sag & Load Capacity Calculator
Predict how much a shelf will sag under a distributed load — and the maximum load before the shelf looks unhappy.
Calculator
Plywood ~1.5M, oak 1.8M, pine 1.2M.
What makes this different
Most shelf calculators give a single 'max load' number. This one computes actual deflection (sag) under load using the standard beam formula (5wL⁴/384EI), lets you choose fixed/pinned/free end conditions, and shows both the load-to-sag ratio and the load-to-failure ratio.
Who it's for & when to use it
Sizing shelves for books, records, or pantry goods; deciding if a 3/4 in plywood shelf needs a front edge.
How to use
- Enter the dimensions of your material or the parameters of your project.
- Adjust the optional knobs (waste factor, kerf, planer allowance) to match your shop practice.
- Click Calculate and read the output. Use the per-item breakdown for ordering, the totals for budgeting.
- Compare the result to your lumber yard's quote — the effective $/BF column is the apples-to-apples number.
Formula: Deflection = 5wL⁴ / 384EI for pinned-pinned. I = (w × t³) / 12. Limiting deflection: L/360 for books, L/180 for general.
Notes & tips from the shop
- Visible sag becomes objectionable around L/120. Design for L/240 to L/360 to keep shelves looking flat.
- Plywood shelves sag less than solid wood of equal thickness because the cross-plies resist deflection.
- A front edge band (1.5 in solid wood) stiffens the shelf dramatically without much added cost.
Frequently asked questions
Is sag a strength issue or a stiffness issue?
Stiffness. Most shelves never break; they just look wrong because they sag. Design for stiffness, not strength.
Does adding a center bracket help?
Halving the span quarters the deflection — that's why a center support is so effective.
What about glass shelves?
Glass shelves use the same beam formula with E ≈ 10,000,000 psi for tempered glass, but deflection limits are tighter because glass shows distortion visibly.
Limitations
Single-span beam. Cantilever shelves, multi-span, and shelving with center brackets need a different model.
